About Algy
Our story begins in the 1920s, in Manhattan's Garment
District. Algy was born as the dream of three men whose lives and careers
centered around fine embroidery and stitchery. From our formal inception
in 1937 our primary business was the design of finely fabricated fashions;
first as a segment of New York's fashion industry and then as professional
costumers.
The 40s and 50s saw our business change as we moved from
the design and manufacture of theatrical costumes, recital costumes and lyrical costumes to the production of costumes and uniforms available nationwide to schools and studios. We evolved from a retailer to a direct merchant. Algy was a pioneer in the catalog arena, producing our first one in 1954, and our first full-color
catalog four years later.
Always known for our embroidery, by the 1950s we had produced
our first solid sequin majorette uniform. With the popularity of college
halftime shows, Algy received national exposure; our leotards quickly
became, and remain today, the state of the art in majorette uniforming!
We made an important decision in 1970 to move to Florida,
and packed our bags. The change gave us more room, more resources and
a beautiful place to do business; our factory as it exists today is a
result of this move. The nation's bicentennial was another huge landmark
in our history; every troupe, group and team marched, danced and twirled
in red, white and blue and the chances were good that they did it in an
Algy!
The 1980s were a period in which alternative sports such
as color guard came of age. We introduced our first lycra® garment in
1979, responding to the changes in movements and costuming requirements.
And in 1984 we reentered the recital costume & dance costume industry with our first comprehensive four-color catalog. And our sequin-trimmed lycra® dance dresses and jazz costumes became an Algy hallmark.
The past decade has seen a phenomenal growth in the pageantry
arts, and demand for stylish, well-crafted uniforms has kept us very busy.
Sue Gordon assumed the Algy Presidency in 1997, marking the third generation
of her family to lead the company. "As we enter the new millennium, we
are determined to remember the values of our past as we create the products
of the future," she says. That means more innovative styles and fabrics,
advance fabrication techniques and the same craftsmanship and attention
to detail that Algy's dance costumes have been and still is famous for. It is now a new millenium and Algy costumes has taken another step into the Cyber world and now we are proud to offer our quality recital costumes, jazz costumes, lyrical costumes, ballet costumes, hip hip costumes, hip hop dancewear, dance apparel, dance accessories and dance shoes to our customers at the touch of their fingertips!
